Family Favorites

No matter how often we come to Hawai'i, there are some places that are just built into our itinerary. Below we keep a list of these "must visit" places. We encourage you to make every effort to visit them too!

Big Island Shave Ice

This is some of the best shave ice anywhere in the islands. Drive to Kawaihae and in the parking lot of the Blue Dragon restaurant, you'll see a big blue trailer with a long line! The wait will be worth it! Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 to 5:30. Sundays 1:30 to 5:30. Closed Mondays.

Basically Books

Located in Hilo, this little book store is a terrfific place to find some unique and often local books, maps, music and gifts.

Cafe 100

Located in Hilo, this is one of our favorite places for local food. The Chile is the best anywhere, and we always make the trek over the mountains to lay in a supply towards the beginning of every visit.

Hamakua Macadamia Nut Co

No visit to Hawai'i is complete without sampling one of it's most important crops. The store is in Kawaihae, just 10 minutes north of our condo. Delicious and makes great gifts.

Hawaiian Ice Cones

This is usually our first stop after getting off the plane. Located ight in Kona and locally owned, we're there so much the owner recognizes us on sight!

Hawaiian Style Cafe

There is nothing better than breakfast in Kamuela. This little local place usually has a line out the door, so come with a supply of patience. It is worth the wait!

Lava Lava Beach Club

Lava Lava Beach Club

This place, located right on the beach at Anaeho'omalu Bay, did not even exist when we started coming to the island. When construction began on a stretch of one of our favorite beaches, we were not happy. Once it opened, the killer location, low-key atmosphere and terrific happy hour (from 3:00 to 5:00) won us over!

Ocean Sushi

This sushi place in Hilo doesn't look like much, but it serves up the tastiest sushi around. Lots of options for non-sushi lovers as well. It can be busy, but the wait is worth it!

Tex Drive In

Located in Honoka'a, well north of Hilo, this place serves some of the tastiest malasadas around. We never fail to stop here on our way back home from Hilo.

Tropical Dreams Ice Cream

Havi is a small town on the very northern tip of the island. In this town is the best ice cream in the islands, and possibly the planet.

Two Ladies Kitchen

Many asian influences color local cuisine, and one of the tastiest is the desert known as 'mochi'. It comes in a vast variety, but our favorite is fresh strawberry mochi, and this place, located in Hilo, has the best we've ever tasted, anywhere.
